Maasai Mara National Reserve

Southwest Kenya · Kenya
The Great Migration and Africa's richest big-cat country.

The Maasai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated safari destination and the northern stage of the Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra cross the crocodile-filled Mara River between roughly July and October.

Even outside migration season, the Mara is extraordinary — it has one of the highest predator densities in Africa, with frequent sightings of lions, cheetahs and leopards across its open plains. The surrounding conservancies (Naboisho, Mara North, Olare Motorogi) offer the same wildlife with fewer vehicles and a more exclusive feel.

The Mara is easily reached by a 45-minute flight from Nairobi, and pairs beautifully with Tanzania's Serengeti for a complete migration experience or with Uganda/Rwanda gorillas for a full East Africa journey.

Highlights

  • The Great Migration river crossings (July–October)
  • Africa's highest density of lions, cheetahs and leopards
  • Exclusive private conservancies bordering the reserve
  • Maasai cultural experiences
  • Quick 45-minute flight from Nairobi

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara?
The dramatic Mara River crossings typically take place between July and October, when the herds are in the northern Maasai Mara. The Mara offers excellent big-cat viewing year-round, however.
How much are Maasai Mara park fees in 2026?
Peak-season entry (July–December) is USD 200 per adult per 24 hours, dropping to USD 100 in the low season (January–June). Private conservancy fees are separate and vary by camp.
Should I visit the Maasai Mara or the Serengeti?
They are part of the same ecosystem and both are superb. The Mara is easier to reach (a short flight from Nairobi) and has exceptional predator density; the Serengeti is vast and remote. Many travellers combine both to follow the migration, which we can arrange.
